More than 30 young scientists from the German Competence Centers for research on Artificial Intelligence met in February for a special edition of the network-wide established virtual Pitch Talks on the topic of Explainability of Artificial Intelligence. After presentations from the individual centers, the participants creatively and innovatively addressed current issues in this research area in the second part of the event.
The pump manufacturer Wilo and the ML2R at TU Dortmund University have entered into a strategic partnership. The cooperation partners are working together with the aim of establishing and expanding the use of Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning at Wilo with regard to customer benefits, optimized business processes and new product functions.
A center-wide Science Code Slam marked the end of 2021 at ML2R. The researchers of the Competence Center worked in virtual topic groups on a variety of questions surrounding Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning and Deep Learning. Professor Christian Bauckhage, senior scientist at the ML2R Competence Center, is an expert in Artificial Intelligence and a discussion partner in a new episode of the TV series “With Pelzig on the bench” broadcast by 3Sat. The show focuses on the question of how AI will shape the future and change the role of humans.
The virtual ML2R Autumn School 2021 from October 4th to 8th was dedicated to the industry-relevant “Bin Packing”. In addition to lectures, a Design Thinking workshop, and social events, the participants worked in small groups on a concrete Bin Packing problem and developed Machine Learning solutions for it.
Dr. Tiansi Dong is the lead organizer of a Dagstuhl seminar from September 5th to 10th. With participation from interdisciplinary experts from around the world, the seminar “Structure and Learning” aims to develop a roadmap that integratively brings together structure and learning in the fields of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.
Lukas Heppe (ML2R) and Mirko Bunse (SFB 876) took second place in the Ariel Machine Learning Data Challenge at the ECML PKDD 2021 conference. The researchers developed a Deep Learning approach that allows for accurate predictions of the radii of extrasolar planets. ML2R scientists study the machine analysis and processing of large astrophysical data sets.
The German AI centers came together at a social event on Natural Language Processing at this year’s ICML conference. The event “Zeitgeist in NLP” on July 21 included a panel and audience discussion, presentations, topical tables, and opportunities for networking and exchange.
The new booklet “AI in SMEs: Recognizing potentials, laying foundations, mastering transformations” by the Plattform Lernende Systeme shows the potentials of Artificial Intelligence for SMEs on the basis of 17 detailed Use Cases. ML2R contributes to the brochure with a project on intelligent data summaries in rolling mills.
At the Digital Day 2021, ML2R and RapidMiner host a Hands-On Workshop on “Machine Learning: An Introduction to the Key Technology of Artificial Intelligence”. On 18 June from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. CEST participants will gain exciting insights into the basics of Machine Learning and will execute a typical ML-workflow. Registration for the event is free of charge.
Researchers from the ML2R network are among the “Most Influential Scholars” in the annual ranking of the online e-magazine AI 2000. Using computer algorithms, the AMiner system generates rankings based on citation frequencies in the most important publications for more than 250,000 renowned scientists.
At a symposium on May 5, ML2R scientists discussed the latest scientific findings on Quantum Machine Learning together with experts from Fraunhofer ITWM and DLR. In the research area Machine Learning on quantum computers, ML2R researchers develop ML algorithms and solutions using state-of-the-art quantum processors.
The Network of National Centres of Excellence for AI Research has launched its virtual Pitch Talks. Katharina Morik coordinates the network, which unites six leading AI research institutions in Germany.

The conference on the topic “AI is now. Seizing opportunities – shaping development” will take place virtually on February 23, 2021, starting at 10 am.
Katharina Morik is among the first 50 signatories of #SheTransformsIT. The initiative is dedicated to empowering women and girls in IT and aims to increase their participation in shaping the societal process of digitization. The ML2R promotes the next generation of female researchers and educates them to become leading ML experts.

In the categories Application, Research and Foundations, researchers of the Competence Center and renowned guest authors provide exciting insights into scientific results, interdisciplinary projects and industry-related findings surrounding Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence.
Joint coding, programming and writing: The ML2R’s Science Year 2020 concluded with a center-wide Science Code Slam. The Competence Center’s team came together in groups virtually and worked on various tasks related to Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence. The ML2R looks back on an extraordinary and exciting year.
The Network of National Centres of Excellence for AI Research celebrated “A Decemberfest on Trustworthy AI Research” at NeurIPS on December 8. The network’s coordination office, led by Katharina Morik, organized the social event, which included keynote speeches, a panel discussion and thematic exchange, together with Hendrik Strobelt (IBM Research).
This year’s edition of the Digital Summit addressed the central topic “More sustainability by means of digitization”. The competence center ML2R participated in the online event, which took place on November 30 and December 1, with contributions from spokespersons Prof. Dr. Katharina Morik and Prof. Dr. Stefan Wrobel.
At the 4th Dortmund Science Conference, scientific and economic experts from Dortmund discussed the opportunities and challenges of AI with participating guests. ML2R spokesperson, Prof. Katharina Morik, and representative of the ML2R partner Fraunhofer IML, Prof. Michael ten Hompel, provided exciting insights into “AI research made in Dortmund”.
On October 26, Prof. Dr. Dr. h. c. Michael ten Hompel was awarded the Innovation Prize of NRW in the category “Honorary Award”. Minister of Economic Affairs and Innovation, Pinkwart, commended ten Hompel, representative of the ML2R-partner Fraunhofer IML, for his contributions to sustainable advances in science, business and society.
The latest edition of the series “Grand Challenges: Answers from North Rhine-Westphalia”, which took place on October 29, focused on sustainable and trustworthy AI technologies. The event was co-organized by the competence center ML2R. Katharina Morik and Stefan Wrobel shaped the event’s program and presented innovative ML2R solutions.
The competence center ML2R has published a report on the implemented activities since its founding in 2018. The report, which gives readers an overview of research and transfer projects, opportunities for collaboration and cooperation partners as well as conducted events, is available online.
On October 20, the competence platform KI.NRW in cooperation with the ML2R will present basics, methods and potentials of automated analysis and processing of documents. Within the framework of the digital exchange format »AI2GO«, experts will provide insights into the research field of Cognitive Process Automation and show examples of its application in practice.
Scientific excellence and transnational exchange characterized the meeting of the ML2R’s Steering Board, the scientific advisory board of the Competence Center ML2R. Exchange and knowledge transfer on the topic of Artificial Intelligence (AI) were the focus of the Intelligent Future Days 2020, a three-day event co-organized by the ML2R Competence Center, which brought together more than 250 participants from research, business and politics.

The Learning Systems platform, Germany’s platform for Artificial Intelligence, publishes an impulse paper that discusses potentials and challenges for AI certification in order to promote the development of trustworthy AI systems “made in Europe”.
The Research Ministers of Germany and France have signed a Joint Declaration of Intent for a Franco-German research and innovation network. As the German coordinator for the collaboration of the German and French AI centers, Katharina Morik played a decisive role in the development process of the document.
In the latest issue of the Handelsblatt Journal “Artificial Intelligence”, Prof. Dr. Katharina Morik addresses the question: How do we achieve AI excellence in Germany? In a guest article, Morik calls for the expansion of AI professorships as the foundation for the systematic strengthening of AI competence centers.
Prof. Dr. Katharina Morik gave a keynote speech on the state of German-French cooperation in the field of Machine Learning. The occasion was the third meeting of the working group “Disruptive Innovations and Artificial Intelligence” (AG DIKI) in the European Parliament.
Raphael Fischer presented his research on the completion of spatio-temporal datasets at a book launch. Using Machine Learning techniques, Fischer reconstructed satellite images in which parts of the earth’s surface were obscured by clouds.
The ML2R will be funded with an additional 8 million Euros until the end of 2022. As a result, the research profile of the competence center will be extended to include Machine Learning on quantum computers and trustworthy Machine Learning.
The North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities and the Arts hosted the Academy Day of Artificial Intelligence. The event, which was organized by Prof. Dr. Katharina Morik, was dedicated to Machine Learning as a key technology of Artificial Intelligence.
As one of two contributions, the ML2R-paper »Prototypes within Minimum Enclosing Balls« was selected for the Best Paper Award at this year’s International Conference on Artificial Neural Networks (ICANN 2019).

Science, economy and politics – The kick-off event of the Competence Center Machine Learning Rhine-Ruhr brought the ML community together. The meeting of the Machine Learning Community attracted more than 150 visitors to Dortmund.
